As much as I love Autumn I never sprint to it, I linger in the August as it is our high season despite the fact she is riddled with weeds. I donβt care I will get to them when I can. As you know I love the beach too, but I rarely go to swim much anymore, rather I go to dig clams which is totally Zen for me. Fall will come soon enough, today though I embrace her, my love, the August garden! Love this essay! π
Thank you for this amazing essay. I laughed out loud in the bathtub while I read about December meβ¦.that was too beautiful. I for one here in north Idaho are just now watching tomatoe plants blossom in my forest gardenβ¦so August me is very very happy lol.
I think I might have to get a food processor to make those popsicles. I have a Vitamix and we have been using strawberry lemonade in the silicone popsicle holders. but I saw food processor today at a yard sale earlier today. I might have to return to get it. π±
Darn I was sort of hoping I would be βforcedβ to return to that yard sale. I got my first kitchen aid mixer today for $20. A birthday present to me from the heavens as I have always wanted one but could never justify. It was a great day.
August Me only goes outside long enough to get the minimal amount of work done....mow, clean bird baths, water the plants on the graves of my kin...this is the first summer the garden has truly been left to itself and it shows. A veritable jungle. But it's not just August of this year...it's August of this life. Giving this tiring body time to hopefully recuperate from the previous 60+ years of going All In.
My favorite Alison Krauss song was a collab with Cape Breton Scot fiddler Natalie MacMaster called Get Me Through December. I wager you would love it too.
First week of September is the start of our homeschool year. You can feel the year turn, run her fingers through her locs, piling them into a bun and say "Alright it's time for a change." August is *exactly* for glistening, laying around, eating cold meals and drinking cold drinks.
I am planted in this heat too! I love Autumn. But not yet, people. It's High Summer now, and I want to be in it. Don't talk to me about pumpkin spice and cardigans. That's for October. Don't rush me!
(Susan here) You bring a happy smile to my face. I grew up in N GA ("North" there means nothing π)... and we live in E TN. So your description of the August morning "soup pot" and "haze of moisture" squatting on your farm at 7am resonated. Your writing, on the other hand (in addition to the popsicle recipe), is that cool breeze we're all longing for right now! So thank you!
August me spends the early morning hand watering to keep a few plants alive under large umbrellas and shade cloth , most of the others are brown, burned up in the blaze of the summer sun . Then by 10a.m the heat and humidity of Texas runs me inside , ever grateful for air conditioning .
Your unexpected twist of a recipe at the end is genius, and seems refreshing.π
I agree!
THANKS FOR THE POPSICLE RECIPE!

This resonates with me.
Yes.
Such a good reminder to be in the Zen moment and soak it up. π

I bet your Vitamix would do the trick!

Happy birthday!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this and felt it in my soul as a fellow South Carolinian gardener. We were absolutely drenched today doing chores π

August is my second-favorite month (October first-favorite, of course!). You summed it up beautifully, as you always do!

I love getting your emails. You write so beautifully.
It's nice to give ourselves over to all of our seasons. I really enjoyed this piece. Thank you!
